Chinese Christians Making Impact in Earthquake Area

(June 2, 2008)

"People suddenly became aware of the importance of death and people are more willing to listen. At the same time, Christians can go to witness to them. We also went to hospitals and were quite surprised—things are quite open. The leaders wanted people to visit, not only to identify their own family members, but to encourage and comfort those traumatized patients."

(Santa Ana, CA)—The following is [a portion of] an interview with Open Doors Director of China Training (his name is not given due to security issues). He talks about the devastating earthquake which hit China on May 12, and how Christians are making an impact physically and spiritually during relief efforts. (The earthquake left 69,000 dead, 18,000 missing and 5 million homeless.)

After your trip to Chengdu, China, can you describe what you saw when you were there?
As many of you have already seen on the news, the devastation and total disaster happening to these innocent people is extremely difficult to witness. Although we really do not know how many Christians died, the Christian ratio in Sichuan province is one of the lowest in the country (1 to 2 percent of the population.) Reports indicate that many Christians survived the earthquake.

For example, one group of Believers were praying in a rather old building on that day. Logically, when the earthquake hit the area, this building should have gone down. But the old building survived with all the Christians safe inside while other seemingly stronger buildings collapsed all around them. One Believer did not attend prayer meeting that day but went to sell vegetables at the market. She was crushed to death when the market building collapsed.

The buildings of three churches we work with are damaged so badly that they can no longer hold meetings inside and they need to be rebuilt in the future. However, we also saw the strong hand of God among the believers from the first day—Christians were driving their own cars and purchasing medicine, water and food to go to the areas which were missed by the government trucks and cars. And, without exception, before distributing those goods, Christians are telling survivors about eternal hope and eternal salvation. People are extremely touched by the fact that others would come and provide for their needs. Many of them are saying for the first time, "Thank God, thank Jesus," and they are hearing the Gospel. These churches will continue to follow up and continue to evangelize for many weeks and months to come. These churches will be busy meeting the needs of the survivors and also telling them about eternal life.

So there are more possibilities to evangelize today than there were before?
Yes, Sichuan is a poor province and churches are not very strong. One church we visited, a small church with about 40 households, lost half of their members because the Eastern Lightning (a Chinese cult) attack caused them to discontinue believing. Pastors struggle with poor surroundings and hilly roads when they make their rounds.

But the earthquake may have changed all that. People suddenly became aware of the importance of death and people are more willing to listen. At the same time, Christians can go to witness to them. We also went to hospitals and were quite surprised—things are quite open. The leaders wanted people to visit, not only to identify their own family members, but to encourage and comfort those traumatized patients.

Christians from elsewhere in China, then, are going to help in the devastated area?
This is another "all things working together for good." Traveling would have been prohibited because of the Olympics coming in August, but groups we work with in other cities are forming groups of volunteer helpers. One group has 17, another has 30, including nurses and doctors, who are raising funds for their own transportation and also bringing extremely generous donations. They are not only going for a few days or a few weeks, they are going to stay there long-term so they can truly express the love of God to these people who are suffering so much.

Prayer against xenophobic and ethnic violence in South Africa

Zec 7:9-10 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart." (ESV)

(Call issued by: Jericho Walls, Transformation Africa and the Jesus Project. Similar calls are issued by the AFM and other groups)

This call for prayer is to ask all denominations and Christian organisations to pray on Sunday, 25 May 2008 and in the weeks to follow for the ethnic violence in the nation.

God’s word clearly command that we should love and care for foreigners the way we love and care for ourselves and our local neighbours, even if we perceive them to be enemies (see attached information concerning Biblical values concerning treatment of foreigners). It is also true that any issue concerning violence has two sides, therefore, let us pray and seek God without any prejudice and preconceived ideas in our own hearts.

1. Examine your own heart before God. If you harbour any ethnic or racial hatred, bitterness or resentment, confess it before the Lord. Ask Him to fill your heart with the love of the Father, who is the Father of all nations. Matt 5:44,45
2. Pray for those who are seeking asylum in South Africa because of war, famine or oppression that they experience in their own countries. Pray that they will find a safe haven in South Africa, that the people of South Africa will welcome them with a compassionate and hospitable spirit. Lev 19:33-34; Lev 23:22; Eze 47:21-22
3. Ask the Lord to reveal any injustice, violence and crime committed by foreigners, so that they can be brought to justice. Ps 94:3-9
4. Pray that the Lord will be gracious and forgive the bloodshed of ethnic violence that raged in South Africa, and silence the voices of the blood that cry for revenge. Gen 4:10,11
5. Pray that the Lord will provide in the needs of both local South Africans and foreigners who are living in South Africa, without having to compete for jobs. Ask for God to turn this tide and that they might even begin to find common grounds for business and in so doing create job opportunities for both South Africans and those abroad. Phil 4:11-19
6. Pray that the Lord will replace the bitterness, hatred and resentment in the hearts of South African and foreigners alike, with his love, compassion, acceptance and hospitality. Eph 4:24-32
7. Pray that the Church take up her role as watchmen on the wall on these issues and day and night prayer for a breakthrough. That she will take a firm stand for justice and for all, both citizens of South Africa and foreigners. Matt 5:25-46
8. Pray that the Church will realise her responsibility to be a safe refuge for anyone in need, whether a fellow South African or a foreigner. Ps 118:8. Pray for open hearts towards those who are poor, hungry, homeless and jobless. If you notice any such people in your neighbourhood, will you not encourage your church to reach out to them and serve them with food, clothes or even a place to stay. Is 58:7
9. Pray for the circumstances that drove the foreigners out of their nations to come for refuge in South Africa will change so they will be able to return home to their own countries with hope in their hearts and the testimony of Jesus Christ in their hearts. Also pray for those awaiting their return, to have opportunities to hear and accept the gospel. 2 Tim 4:2
10. Pray for our Government to not only take a stand against all kinds of violence, but also take practical action to do so. Ask the Lord to pour out His Spirit of loving-kindness and gentleness in the hearts of people in all spheres of life to become the political, social, racial, economical and judicial solution to the problem of ethnic violence. Gal.5:23
11. Pray that God will pour out the grace of His salvation on South Africa and other nations in Africa, to find and implement godly solutions for the continuing problem of poverty, disease, weak economic conditions, racial violence and hatred. Ask for all – as they are reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, to also be reconciled with one another. Matt 5:22-24
12. Pray that the citizens of South Africa will receive a baptism of the love of God, through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, to rise up in this hour of need, and to be a place of refuge, both spiritually and physically, for those in need. Ask that those who enter South Africa to find solution for their physical needs, will also have encounters with the Saviour, Jesus Christ. Eph 3:17-21

13. BIBLICAL VALUES CONCERNING TREATMENT OF FOREIGNERS

1. We should treat foreigners with love, grace and justice

Exo 22:21 "You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. (ESV)

2. We must treat a foreigner similar to a native of the land

Lev 19:33-34 "When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. (ESV)

3. We must share the produce of our land with foreigners and allow them to live amongst us.

Lev 23:22 "When you reap the harvest of your land, don't reap the corners of your field or gather the gleanings. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners. I am GOD, your God." (ESV)
Eze 47:21-22 "So you shall divide this land among you according to the tribes of Israel. You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the sojourners who reside among you and have had children among you. They shall be to you as native-born children of Israel. With you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. (ESV)

4. Foreigners must be judged with the same rules as local citizens

Num 15:15-16 The community has the same rules for you and the foreigner living among you. This is the regular rule for future generations. You and the foreigner are the same before GOD. The same laws and regulations apply to both you and the foreigner who lives with you." (ESV)

5. Foreigners have the right to justice

Deu 1:16 At the same time I gave orders to your judges: "Listen carefully to complaints and accusations between your fellow Israelites. Judge fairly between each person and his fellow or foreigner. (ESV)

6. Financial support must be given to foreigners

Deu 26:12-13 "When you have finished paying all the tithe of your produce in the third year, which is the year of tithing, giving it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your towns and be filled, then you shall say before the LORD your God, 'I have removed the sacred portion out of my house, and moreover, I have given it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all your commandment that you have commanded me. I have not transgressed any of your commandments, nor have I forgotten them. (ESV)

7. Those who oppress foreigners or treat them harshly can come under a curse

Deu 27:19 "'Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' (ESV)
Mal 3:5 "Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts. (ESV)

8. One reason why Israel went into exile is because they mistreated foreigners amongst them

Eze 22:6-7,22 "Behold, the princes of Israel in you, every one according to his power, have been bent on shedding blood. Father and mother are treated with contempt in you; the sojourner suffers extortion in your midst; the fatherless and the widow are wronged in you. The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy, and have extorted from the sojourner without justice. (ESV)

9. God’s favour will be on those who treat foreigners with kindness

Jer 7:5-7 "For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly execute justice one with another, if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever. (ESV)

10. Jesus Himself will pronounce either blessing or curse depending on our attitude towards foreigners

Mat 25:34-46 Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (ESV)

GOD IS THE ONE WHO SEES!

Psa 94:3-9 O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; and they say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive." Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?

SPECIAL REPORT ON CHILDREN IN PRAYER

Bishop Peter Sekhonyane from Orange Farms, South Africa shares the following:

The coming of Father Anton Cruz, from India to South Africa, will always be an unforgettable experience to me.

God used that man to open my eyes to see the raw, unused and neglected power that is potential in the Hands of the Almighty God to change the heart of our nation. God’s power to change the nation’s heart - South Africa needs a new heart.

God’s power can be seen in the children’s prayer.

Immediately, as Father Anton Cruz spoke, the curtain was swung open, I saw things that I knew and was familiar with, but were always closed-up to my understanding. I have been a Tent Ministry worker all my life in the Ministry where God called me and have also been amongst the Leading Gospel musicians as well as a Pastor to many Churches. My path has been coming across hundreds if not thousands of children wherever I went. Before the first Tent peg is hit and driven into the ground there will be about 50 to 100 children ready to offer their tiny help which was forever met with rebuke and chasing away. When the Tent is up and the sound system is being carried into the Tent, they would want to tear one another apart just to be given the privilege of carrying something into the Tent. When the sound is being set, there they are, all seated, watching and listening with glee as all kinds of sound tests are made. Only to be removed to the back of the Tent to allow their mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers to sit comfortably in front.

During the day we would hire somebody to look after the Tent and chase these kids away. You see, they had nothing to do. To them the Tent was a good mountain to climb and slide down. It was a time for them to break bottles and experiment as to how sharp is the broken bottle against the Tent ropes. Many times we found the Tent down on the ground, brought down by these “jobless mighty warriors.”

Then came Father Anton Cruz. God opened my eyes and Father Anton Cruz’s statement, God repeated in my ears: “ I will use them…”

The Children In Prayer Ministry was launched in Orange Farms on 1 April, 2008. Pamphlets were typed and delivered house to house by the children themselves, announcing the day of the “Launch”, 1 April 2008 at 4.00 pm. Twenty four hours earlier, on 31 March 2008, at the venue of the “Launch”, 83 kids turned up, some with their mothers, 24 hours early.

From 1 April 2008 to 30 April, there were 12 places in Orange Farms where a total number of 1513 children were taught to pray. Every day the figures increased. You need to see this!!!!

Now they do Prayer Walking, home visits, picking up prayer requests and in child faith, pray over these requests.

I am in possession of some of the testimonies of parents and Pastors of changes they. Today I took the Police Superintendent to some of these places, she was just speechless. She never even said goodbye to me. I may not know what she has seen, but I can assure you she saw something!!

Let us then join hands, in whatever manner the Lord will allow us and start the real “Freedom Walk” into the society that is filled with many living according to Godly Values. Therein lies our blessing as a Nation.

Let us stand together and let us not only sing “it” let us “do” it in our Country, our beloved South Africa.

Let us not leave the children out because we need them NOW, more than ever.

By the way, we feed these children a very simple but nutritious meal once a day. That makes a big difference in their lives.

Testimony - Kathu Prayer Watch

(Interview with Elzana Buckle, coordinator of the 24/7 prayer watch in Kathu, South Africa)

HOW DID YOUR PRAYER WATCH START?
The story of the Kathu prayer watch starts with an all-night prayer meeting at a local congregation in 1996. We simply carried on praying for the following two years, every Saturday night, starting at three o'clock in the morning till dawn. God encouraged us to keep on praying. When we heard about a promise that revival was to start from the southern point of South Africa and progress through the whole of Africa, we started praying with new fervour – we were not going to miss out on anything. At that stage we had never even heard of a prayer watch. We asked people to join us in prayer, but we made one mistake, we chose a time that would suit others. And so it happened that over the years we were arranging prayer meetings more or less at all times of the day and night. Yet it never suited everybody, because the people who say they want to pray and those who actually pray, are two different stories.

At that stage about 2 –12 people prayed together every Friday night. The Lord made known to us Kathu's gifts and creation purpose and the people prayed these Scriptures faithfully. In May 2002 the official opening of the Kathu prayer watch took place. People prayed at their homes during May 2003 and 2004. Towns in the vicinity started joining in, praying together in a 24-hour prayer watch. Every town had its own prayer coordinator who organised prayer in that town. Actually there were five organisers and each town then had a 24/7 prayer watch every fifth week for those seven days. In September 2004 we started praying in a flat in a neighbourhood in Kathu. It was a big step for people to now shift from 'praying at my home' to 'praying at a central place'. As from January 2007, 11 years later, the prayer watch in Kathu started praying day and night. The towns in our vicinity now pray in a cycle of four weeks, which means that each town has the opportunity once a month to organise a 24/7 prayer watch for seven days. We trust the Lord for another prayer coordinator in Postmasburg. There are still groups that pray weekly or monthly in other smaller towns like Dingleton, Olifantshoek and Hotazel.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
People often ask us if we are happy now that our dream has come true, that people are praying 24/7. This is when I realise we never really had this dream; we just looked for people to pray. But a place where we pray day and night – I never dreamt about such a place. Actually I'm not really one for dreams, if you know the Lord says pray, then you pray, and that's that. Where it goes from there is the Lord's plan and not ours. So, we do not really have many dreams for the future. We plan to carry on praying and asking people to pray with us. The one thing we did right, by the grace of God, was to ask people to pray, and also to keep on praying ourselves.

HOW DO YOU ORGANISE 24/7?
At present we are four organisers in Kathu and each of us organises one week of 24/7 prayer. We pray for three weeks and week four we have a Word watch and then we just read the Bible. Immediately after week four we start with week one again. During the course of each week approximately 30 people pray. So, we have about 120 people per month who attend the prayer watch. Those who pray are from different denominations and race groups, men, women and young people. The day and night prayer needed a lot of attention and work, so that last year we didn't reach out to other towns at all. Today the prayer watch is more independent and we will have more time to reach out to our friends in the rest of our area, and if possible also the Northern Cape.

DO YOU SEE YOUR PRAYERS BEARING FRUIT?
Kathu is one of the most prosperous towns in SA with regard to finances, racial integration and low crime rate. A newspaper report in the Volksblad newspaper last year placed Kathu 2nd on the list of 10 municipal regions where people would like to live. The other eight areas were all in the Western Cape, only Kathu was in a different province. Apart from this, I believe that the most important fruits of the prayer watch can be found in the personal lives of the people who go there to pray. People are busy learning a lifestyle of prayer; almost all who pray there testify that they experience a distinct presence of the Lord there. No one who comes out is the same person who went in, and this is how the Lord is going to change our country. One person at a time, one person who enters into His presence in a prayer watch, one person who realises that Elijah was human just like you and me, but just look at the power of his prayer. One person at a time who is filled by God with Hope and Glory. If we still believe that God is going to transform our country, it will only happen by your prayers and mine. Because it is in His presence that He changes me, and he changes the people I ask to pray, because I cannot. The more people we can involve in our prayer watches, the more God is able to bring change in our country, and this is the way it is going to happen: Transformation for South Africa and Africa comes through only one person at a time that takes part in a prayer watch and is changed there by God.

WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE OTHERS ON STARTING A PRAYER WATCH, OR WHO MIGHT BE STRUGGLING?
My advice to people who want to start a new prayer watch would be that they should pray in a prayer watch from the word go, that is if it is to be an interdenominational watch, but just start doing something. Don't wait for others. Don't expect your preacher or pastor to do it, but don't exclude them in the process. DO NOT DO IT ALONE, get a prayer partner to help you. Do what you think will work in your situation. Be willing to start on a small scale. In time God will give you directions Himself about the specific needs of your town. Commit yourself to making a difference in your town, stop inviting other 'smart' people to come and pray there for this or that, you are the smart one who lives there and you are the one who must make a difference there. Just don't stop praying, keep at it!

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY, DID YOU DO WRONG?
We thought it would become easier, and it didn't. We thought that given time, people would want to pray themselves later on, and it still hasn't happened. You must organise all the time, a prayer watch needs to be organised by someone.

A LAST WORD?
I am Elzana, and I'm involved in teaching fulltime. Ronél is involved in helping with the prayer watch fulltime. We both believe that God can make a difference even if it doesn't always look like it.

South Africa - HOW TO PRAY FOR THE ECONOMY TO PROSPER

Many Christians are discouraged by visible deterioration in certain facets of life, by atrocities like crime, realities like unemployment, reduced quality of services rendered and many more. Still there are very practical things that we can focus on in prayer, asking for God's wisdom to come into the hearts and minds of people and that they, in seeing His wisdom, might turn many hearts to accept Him as king of their lives. There are specific issues in need of prayer covering that will help stabilise our economy and even make it grow. Let us not become weary in prayer, knowing that God also wants to meet practical needs of a nation as He does for individuals.

1. Government to heed good advice: Pray that our government would continue to listen to good advice concerning the furthering and establishing of a healthy economy for South Africa and not be caught up in personal or political agendas, but making healthy economical decisions as advised by wise counsel.

2. Increased employment: Pray that the economy will grow specifically in areas where more jobs can be created. Currently it is growing, but remains slow in areas where only a few jobs are created at a time.

3. Growth in agriculture & mining: Pray that the economy will grow specifically in areas where the skills level requirement of people is very low, e.g. agriculture and mining. We are currently growing in areas where high-level skills are necessary, but not forthcoming and this offers no relief for either unemployment or poverty.

4. Increase in skills levels: Also pray for relief in positions requiring highly specified skills, that these would be filled, preferably with South Africans, even if it means bringing back people from abroad.

5. Upgrade of infrastructure: Our country is growing more quickly than infrastructure can be upgraded and expanded. It is not sustainable and major change is needed. Pray that money spent on infrastructure will have the desired effect, specifically in the case of roads, harbours, airports, provision of electricity, schools, hospitals, railways etc.

6. Completion of contracts on time and within budget: Ask for all contractors working on big projects e.g. 2010 stadiums, to continue without accidents, without losses, without labour unrest and very importantly, to deliver on time! Even ahead of schedule!

7. Improved education: Pray for the education system, that more scholars will study mathematics and other subjects qualifying them for degrees at any tertiary institution. Pray for students to complete their tertiary diplomas and degrees so that the need for skilled workers in the economy can be met from within the country. The problem continues that too often we have no other choice than to employ foreigners for such skilled work.

8. Effective policing: We have excellent laws and regulations in South Africa, but the lack of effective policing renders this almost of no value. Please pray without ceasing for breakthroughs in the policing system to maintain law and order. Pirate copies, smuggling of various goods as well as drugs, importing products of low quality e.g. some from China and other countries, have a negative impact on employment and discourage small business enterprise development. Some imported products are even harmful for both human and animal consumption. Please pray for these things to be effectively turned around and addressed by government and police.

9. Clean water: The quality of water sources in some areas is deteriorating. Please pray for urgent attention to this matter, as it is essential for the sustainability of both environment and people, especially in preventing many illnesses and other unsavoury situations.

10. Greater international competitiveness: That South African business would become more competitive in order to export goods and products that will spur on job creation and earning profit from new investments and taxes that can be used to the advantage of all our people.

11. Land issues: Pray for tension between government and farmers to be relieved and bridged and that in some way a compromise is reached. Specifically that tensions concerning land claims issues are resolved and for the process to move to a conclusion. Pray that the land that has been transferred, be productively used to maintain food security in SA.

12. Give thanks: Give thanks to the Lord for those places where the drought has been broken. Pray for those who suffer because of floods. Give thanks to the Lord for there are still those left in government who desire to serve God faithfully and in righteousness. Pray for these righteous ones to also awaken in others the desire to change their ways and follow God.
